Dear Console-ing Passions Participants,
We are excited that you will arrive in Santa Barbara in a couple of
weeks, and are writing with some important information about conference
logistics.
The updated program is now online for your review. Please note that the
panels that were originally scheduled from 5-6:30 on Thursday have
been moved to that same time on Friday. Also, please check the
schedule carefully as we have taken the liberty of putting some of you
down as chairs for various panels. If for any reason you do not want
to chair, please let us know. Rooms are also indicated for each session.
To make your experience in Santa Barbara run as smoothly as possible, we ask
you to go to our website at http://www.filmandmedia.ucsb.edu/cptv/cptv.html and take a few minutes to answer some questions about your logistical needs
for transportation, audio-visual support, and attendance at conference
events. Here is some additional information for your visit:
Registration:
Conference registration will begin at 8:30am on Thursday April 24th at
the conference venue in Corwin Pavilion on the UCSB campus. You will
be able to pick up your conference programs at that time and afterwards. The
first morning sessions will begin at 10:30 on Thursday, and 8:30 on Friday
and Saturday. Light breakfast foods will be served on Friday and Saturday.
Transportation:
Shuttle Bus Service: We will provide once-per-day shuttle bus transportation
between the Mar Monte Hotel and the UCSB UCEN building where the conference
will be held. The Inn at East Beach (1029 Orilla Del Mar) is located across
the street from the Mar Monte, and the shuttle bus pickups will be on that
same street. The conference will not be able to provide personalized
transportation services so we encourage you to take advantage of this bus
service. The pick-up / drop off schedule will be as follows:
April 24th (Thurs)
*depart from Mar Monte hotel (1111 E. Cabrillo Blvd., Santa Barbara,
CA) at 9am, drop off at UCSB campus -parking lot #3 by 9:30.
*depart from UCSB parking lot #3 at 7pm and return to Mar Monte hotel by
7:30.
April 25th (Fri)
*depart from Mar Monte hotel at 7:30am, drop off at UCSB campus
parking lot #3 by 8:00am.
*depart from UCSB parking lot #3 at 8:45pm and return to Mar Monte
hotel by 9:15pm.
April 26th (Sat)
*depart from Mar Monte hotel at 7:30am, drop off at UCSB campus
parking lot #3 by 8:00am.
*depart from Goleta Beach parking lot (next to UCSB) at 6:30pm and
return to Mar Monte hotel by 7:00pm.
Taxis: Please note that a taxi from downtown Santa Barbara to UCSB can cost
as much as $50 one way.
Public Transportation:
It is possible to use public transportation to get to
campus, but this is somewhat complicated and time-consuming. You can take
the Downtown Waterfront Shuttle bus from the hotel to downtown Santa
Barbara's Carrillo Street, then walk a block to the downtown Transit Center,
where you can catch the 24x UCSB express bus that runs to campus every half
hour ($1.25 one way). The website with maps and schedules can be found at:
http://www.sbmtd.gov/. You can also ask the concierge at your hotel for
information on the best way to do this.
Parking:
For those of you who are driving to campus, parking is available
for $8 per day on Thursday and Friday, and $3 per day on Saturday. We
advise you to park in parking lot 22, which is a parking structure; please
follow the signs for Console-ing Passions to the lot. You will need to
purchase a parking pass from one of the yellow parking machines located near
the lot's entrances. The machines accept $1 and $5 bills, and do not give
change, so please plan accordingly. From Lot 22, follow the signs along the
walkway toward the University Center. You can download a campus map at http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/mapFlash.aspx#campus_map.
Special Events and Refreshments:
We want to remind you that there will be a conference reception on Friday
evening from 6:30-8:00 at Corwin Pavillion and a beach party at Goleta
Beach from 4:30-7 on Saturday. Vegetarian options will be available at both
events. Please let us know if you will be attending one or both of these
events by answering the questions on our website. The conference will also
provide coffee, tea and light refreshments throughout the conference.
Santa Barbara weather is fairly temperate this time of year (60-70
degrees F), but it is often colder in the evening as fog rolls in from the
ocean. So please be sure to bring sweaters or jackets.
For information about Santa Barbara in general and things to do while you
are here, you can go to http://www.santabarbaraca.com/.
We are very much looking forward to the conference and we hope you are
too! Travel safely and please let us know if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Anna and Lisa
