SHORT BIO

Carlos Jimenez is a PhD Candidate in Film and Media Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He received his bachelor’s degree in Media and Cinema Studies from DePaul University in Chicago, and an MA in Film and Media studies from UCSB. With the support of the Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, Carlos is currently writing a dissertation, “Drones in the Fields: Indigenous Mexicans, Emergent Technology, and Transnationalism,” that examines the role of media (mobile phones, social media, community radio, and farm machinery) in the everyday lives of transnational migrant farm workers in Oxnard, Calif. He was also recently selected in January 2015 to be the Project Coordinator of Radio Indigena in Oxnard where he is tasked with launching an indigenous-language community radio station. His research brings together media studies and media ethnography to document moments in the history of media technology on behalf of those communities typically overlooked by history.
