Nicole Starosielski is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University. Her research focuses on the global distribution of digital media, and the relationships between technology, society, and the aquatic environment. Her current book project examines the cultural and environmental dimensions of transoceanic cable systems, beginning with the telegraph cables which formed the first global communications network and extending to the fiber-optic infrastructure that carries almost all international internet traffic. She has published numerous essays in journals, including International Communication Gazette, Octopus, Journal of Visual Culture, and Amerasia, and in edited collections such as Ecocinema: Theory and Practice (Routledge, 2012).
