Film/Media 109SA Script Analysis and Coverage 4 credits TR 5:00
p.m. - 6:15 p.m. in the new Social Sciences & Media Studies Building, Room
2303

In this course, students will learn how to skillfully and thoroughly analyze
and review scripts - both screenplays and plays - and to write professional
script coverage. Additionally, students will help to evaluate scripts for a
prestigious international script competition. Students will complete the
course with a minimum of 8 samples of written coverage in-hand, suitable for
use in applying for script reader positions in Los Angeles, where writing
coverage is a highly employable skill.

Instructor approval is required for this course and is based on a writing
sample, as follows: Please read the one-page short story available by
clicking on "Short Story to Read for Required Writing Sample," located near
the top and the bottom of the announcement on this page. Write a 1-2 page
synopsis of the story, followed by your own critical analysis of it. Submit your
synopsis and analysis - maximum length of 2 pages, double-spaced -
to kawalek@filmandmedia.ucsb.edu.
Write the words "Writing Sample for FM 109SA" in the "Subject" line of your e-mail.

Writing samples must be received electronically by 4:00 p.m. on Friday,
November 13th, 2009. Students will be notified of instructor approval by
Friday, November 20, and will receive add codes.

PLEASE NOTE: Graduate students, students who have previous experience
writing coverage, or those who have already taken several script/screenplay
analysis courses, may be eligible for a 1 or 2-unit Independent Study course
option in lieu of the 4-unit FM 109SA course.

For more info, contact Studio Professor Nancy Kawalek at
kawalek@filmandmedia.ucsb.edu with any questions about the course or the
Independent Study option.
