Anastasia Yumeko Hill

Biography

Anastasia was born and (mostly) raised in Seattle, Washington. She moved to Los Angeles in 2004 and graduated from Art Center College of Design with a BFA in Fine Art Media in 2007. She began the PhD program in Film & Media Studies at UC Santa Barbara that year. In continual pursuit to merge theory with practice, she interweaves poetics, performance, and time-based media within her scholarly endeavors. Her current research focuses on ‘altered states’ and the devices, materials, and sites used to incite them in terms of mediation and content. Using the wilderness, LSD, and isolation tank as experimental ‘case studies,’ she explores the limits of what is a medium? and where does the image occur? – materially, topologically, and ontologically.
