Biography
Zach McLane is a PhD candidate in the Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on race, militarism, and issues of environmental justice as they intersect with image making practices. His dissertation charts how images of the environment have been used to both stabilize and unsettle the militarized geographies of California, from the 1960s through the early 2000s. Examining images produced by artists, activists, state, and corporate actors, as well as the development of new imaging technologies such as infrared, the project asks how media have simultaneously represented and materially transformed the landscapes of California. His work has been supported by the Max Kade Foundation, HASTAC, and the Carsey-Wolf Center.
