In this seminar, we explore how processes of datification and machine learning and AI tools are being used to reconfigure media technologies, industries, content, and audiences. Topics to be discussed include: recommendation systems and taste, “blackboxing” and the politics of transparency/opacity, algorithmic bias and racism, the labor of content moderation, data storage and distribution, and online tracking and surveillance, among other issues.
